Revolutionary War orderly book (with typescript) of Lieutenant-Colonel John Brooks of the Inspector-General's staff, Headquarters, the Highlands, Feb. 8 through June 24, 1780. Contains orders issued by General Heath, the commander of West Point and the Hudson Highlands, and by his successor, General Howe, who commanded during Heath's leave of absence (from Feb. 22). The orders concern fortifications, rations and supplies, boats, courts-martial, promotions, returns and reports, and the danger of spies, along with other day-to-day affairs of the army. Brooks later was appointed Brigadier General and served as Governor of Massachusetts from 1816-1823.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
